Nearly half of Those consumers that were polled recently said they aren’t planning to contribute to an IRA for their retirement, because they can’t afford to. Why is this so surprising? Most Americans continue to work week to week, collecting paychecks that are already spent on, food, fuel, housing, utilities, taxes, and so forth simply eat away at all the income a person generates to live on, leaving little or nothing to talk away. As consumer prices continue to climb, pay rates continue to fall, leaving little or no relief in site.
Here is the article written in CNNMoney this week:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — America has a serious problem saving for retirement.
About 49% of Americans say they aren’t contributing to any retirement plan, according to a new survey conducted by LIMRA, a trade association for the financial services industry.
The findings from this survey were disturbing, given that people will increasingly need to rely on their personal savings to make ends meet in retirement,” said Matthew Drinkwater, associate managing director at LIMRA’s retirement research division.
People ages 18 to 34 are the least likely to be saving, with 56% reporting that they are not currently contributing to a retirement plan like an IRA or a 401(k).
“In order to have the adequate savings necessary to meet their financial needs in retirement — which could last 20 or more years — it is critical that these individuals begin saving systematically early in their working years,” Drinkwater said.
Nearly half of consumers said they aren’t planning to contribute to an IRA because they can’t afford to, and only a quarter of Americans have worked with a financial professional to plan for retirement, the survey found.
The study was conducted in April, and LIMRA surveyed 2,697 Americans. ![]()
As one person commented on the article put it: ” The 401K plans, which now almost all companies and public entities have adopted, is going to result in a lot of people sleeping in doorways. Be careful, you 1%, not to trip over them. And some people, think Republicans, actually want to reduce Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?? A previous story said that the great majority of people in this country could not get their hands on $2000 if they had to, say for some emergency. Scary”
That being said, I believe Americans have choices to help themselves. Most people wait till it is to late to do anything about it.
