While the buzz continues to be about the economy and the recession, which politicians continue to tell us baby boomers that it has supposedly been over for quite some time, many people, especially the baby boomer generation, are still feeling its effects. And it is quite possible that Baby Boomers are having the hardest time bouncing back, given that they have been hit hard in their income, taxes, and retirement plans all at the same time.
If you are a baby boomer then you probably have been following the news. If you are not then you are going to be shocked. A recent U.S. News & World Report article examines “The Recession’s Impact on Baby Boomer Retirement.” Here are some of the key take-away points from the article:
- Although the recession affected all age groups, Baby Boomers may not have enough time to rebuild their retirement savings, forcing many to put off retirement or live on a lower retirement income than they expected. Baby Boomers are having a difficult time because companies do not want to give jobs to baby boomers at the incomes baby boomers were accustomed to.
- On the other side of the coin, some Baby Boomers were forced into early retirement because they were unable to find new employment after losing jobs during the recession, thus cutting short retirement plans and falling short of personal financial plans for their retirement
- This has caused household income for those ages 55-64 to fall by 6 to 10 percent or more, and continues to drop annually due to inflation and the devaluation of the US dollar.
As a result, employers are becoming more aware and need to be ready for older workers, this generation of baby boomers, who are going to have to remain in the workforce longer than expected due to the financial struggles they have encountered in the past few years, or who are returning to the workforce on a part-time basis to supplement a less than sufficient retirement income.
A recent Staffing Industry Analysts article listed policy issues that employers will have to reexamine in light of this trend. At the top of the list? Offering “more flexible work patterns,” including telecommuting, consulting, and reduced hours.
This all plays into the trend that has been reported on for the past couple of years. When companies decide to bring older workers in a on part-time, consulting or contract basis, employers can gain or retain these workers’ knowledge, while the workers can supplement their income and remain active on a more flexible basis so they can enjoy other activities and time with family.
But not all baby boomers or retiree’s may want to return to the traditional workforce, or cannot find sufficient work to maintain or replace the loss income and the lifestyle they have grown accustomed to over the past few years. They may want to become involved with a vehicle to enhance their lifestyle, live securely, and still have the freedom that was afforded to them from all their years of hard work.
Many senior citizens have turned to Network Marketing. Some of the reasons are they can start their own business right from home for under $500. They know many people who are in the same position as they are and who would like to be active. Working from home eliminates the commute, and most are already comfortable with speaking to others and networking already in their circle of influence over the years. Traditional businesses offer weaker positions for the masses and most companies don’t want to engage the elderly beyond bagging groceries, allowing someone to pour coffee or serve fries, and become greeters at WalMart, for a mere pittance of the earnings they may have been afforded at an earlier time in life.
